The year was 2058. Captain Elena Vasquez of the USAF Space Command piloted her X-37C interceptor through the asteroid belt, running a routine patrol. The war on Earth had faded into memory, but the stars were the new frontier-and the new battlefield.

Her radar blipped.

"Command, this is Ghost Leader. I've got an unknown track. Bearing two-seven-zero, speed five thousand knots. No transponder. No heat signature."

"Copy, Ghost Leader. Investigate."

Elena pushed her throttle forward, the X-37C surging through the void. The blip grew larger, then resolved into a shape-sleek, black, organic. It pulsed with a faint purple light.

"Unidentified vessel, this is Captain Elena Vasquez of the United States Space Force. Identify yourself or leave this sector."

A voice echoed in her cockpit-not through the radio, but inside her mind. "We have come for your planet. Surrender or be destroyed."

Elena's hands tightened on the controls. "Command, we have hostile contact. Requesting permission to engage."

"Permission granted, Ghost Leader. Good hunting."

The alien ship fired first-a beam of purple energy that sliced through the void. Elena jinked left, rolled, came up behind the enemy.

"Fox three," she said.

The missile streaked toward the alien craft, struck, and exploded. The ship crumpled, then vanished in a flash of light.

"Target destroyed," Elena reported. "But Command, I think that was just a scout. There are more out there."

"Copy, Ghost Leader. Return to base. We'll prepare for the next wave."

Elena turned her ship toward Earth, the stars streaking past. The war had come to space. And she was ready.

She touched the photograph of her family, tucked into her flight suit. "I'll be home soon," she whispered.

But she knew the fight was just beginning. And somewhere in the darkness, the alien fleet was gathering.
